Insomnia
*MOST COMMON DISORDER*

*Inablitiy to obtain adequate quality of sleep. Cant fall asleep (toss & turn) or awake early and cannot get back to sleep

*Who/What: Age over 60, women afer menopause, stress, & med side effects

*Lasts a short period of time
Hypersomnia
*Too much sleep-especially during the day.

*Causes vary. Sleep disorder (sleep apnea), drug/alcohol abuse, head trauma, medications,depression, obesity.

*May be a coping mechanism-No desire or energy to face life.

*S/S: person may fall asleep at work, while eating, during conversation and then wake disoriented, irritated, restless.

*Treat the cause.
Narcolepsy
(neurological disorder)
*UNCONTROLLABLE* desire to sleep-"sleep attack" especially during the day.

*Can happen while standing up, driving a car,middle of convo.

*Falls asleep quickly.

*Treated with CNS stimulants such as Ritalin, must be taken regularly.
Restless Leg Syndrome
*Cannot lie still

*Expericence unpleasant,crawling,creeping, tingling sensations in lower legs. Urge to move legs

*Tx: No caffeine. tobacco, alcohol, mild analgesic, TEDS, sleeping w/a bar of soap under the sheets
Parasomnias
*Waking activities or behaviors that occur during sleep

*SOMNAMBULISM (sleep walking), sleeptalking, night terrors, BRUXISM (grinding of teeth during sleep), ENURESIS (urinating during sleep), sleep-related eating disorder
