Circadian Rhythms ?
a biological rhythm that occurs once every 24 hours. EG the sleep wake cycle
Research for Circadian Rhythms?
MS -
A+W-
Michael Siffre = 6 months in a cave. found that his natural circadian ryhthm was just over 24 hours but could changes dramatically to as much as 48 hours.
Aschoff and Wever - underground bunker, rhythms of between 24 and 25 hours although some rhythms were as long as 9 hours
Positive criticisms of Circadian Rhythms
The findings of the studies have been replicated (Miles et al blind guy study) which suggest that we only adhere to the 24 hour rhythm because of society.
Other studies have found different sleep wake cycles to the assumed 24
Negative studies of Circadian Rhythms
Case studies- difficult to generalise
conflicting research evidence- Czeisler found that a humans natural CR was 24 hours.
It's also improbable that humans have evolved with faulty biological clocks
Ultradian Rhythms
occur more than once every 24 hours EG the sleep/wake cycle
