They had some freedom around town.

2. Could not meet together and have meetings (assemble)
3. Could not travel without a pass

Very harsh punishment - many lashes (hit) from the whip

They would hang

to leave a lifelong scar, so they will remember not to go against the white owner.

John Brown
helped the slaves revolt. He tries to take weapons from military post at Harper's Ferry, but gets captured. He is punished and executed. (killed)This sends a message to other people who want to help slaves rebel.

Abraham Lincoln (no one in Texas voted for him)
Does Lincoln support slavery or is he against it?
Abraham Lincoln is against slavery. He didn't want slavery to expand, but said states with slaves can continue to have slaves (Texas)
Could slaves read and write?
No. It was illegal for slaves to learn to read and write.
Did slaves go to church?
Only stand outside of the church. Some masters would preach to them and would tell them to follow the rules and obey their masters.
How did the slaves rebel against their owners?
1. Slaves would tell each other that they would have a "work slowdown" - they would not do all the work they were suppose to.
2. they would damage property - break a plate, drop something

Why was the US fighting about slavery?
The South used slaves to collect crops and the owners will sell the crop for money. Very important for the economy in the South. The North did not use slaves. They had factories and other kind of work.
Why was the US arguing about states' rights?
The South felt that each STATE should make decisions about slavery and on other issues.
