Basic assumptions of Skinner's theory
-drives, thoughtss, beliefs, and feelings, or anything about internal are unnecessary.(similar to German mechanism)
-if we understand the stimulus properly, we can predict people's behavior - |
What is Skinner's motivational principle?
Empirical Law of Effect because all behavior is seeking reinforcement
What is POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT?
-If something follows that behavior, that behavior is more likely i the future.
-something you like -the opposite is punishment |
What is NEGATIVE REINFORCEMENT?
If you remove NR, the behavior wil be more likely
-eg, fasten seatbelt in order to avoid the beep sound; take aspirin when you have headaches |
What is PUNISHMENT?
-Either take away negative or add positive
-you want behavior to go away -ppor method of modifying behavior b/c it only works when the thread of punishment is there, and the desire still exists after punishment -tends to work in a short-run but not in a long run |
What is REINFORMCEMENT?
strengthening behavior
What is OPERANT CONDITIONING?
-How you learn behavior
Describe SUCCESSIVE APPROXIMATION.
-Change the reinforcement of what is given
Describe TEMPRAL GRADIENT
-Relationship between time, between behavior, and between reinforcement, and how much reinforcement has influence in the future behavior
-The closer the reinforce follows the behavior, the more influence that reinforcer has on whether you will repeat the behavior or not -short term consequences will be more influential than the longer consequences -why alcoholics choose continue to drink despite the detrimental effect |
What's not satisfying about Skinner?
-little clinical applications in Skinner's theory
