Blood Pressure and Pulse

BSI scene is safe

Obtains and reports an accurate pulse rate, strength, and regularity.

Pulse rate is at ___beats per min, pulse is strong with a regular rhythm.

Obtain and reports accurate blood pressure

I will choose the appropriate cuff size for the patient. Make sure the cuff is 1in above the AC and covering 2/3 of the pts bicept. Make sure the cuff is on tight. I will find the pts brachial artery and place the diaphram of the stethoscope on it. Blood pressure is ___ systolic over ___ diastolic.

What is the normal range for an adult blood pressure?

100-140 systolic and 60-90 diastolic. It may be normal for people with small frames to have systolic pressure in the 90s.

What is the formula for a normal pediatric blood pressure?

Systolic is 70-90 +2×Age of the pediatric

Diastolic is 2/3 of the Systolic

What is the formula to obtain a pulse pressure?

Pulse pressure=systolic pressure minus diastolic pressure

Explain the relationship between pulse points and associated with blood pressure

Radial pulse indicates systolic pressure of at least 80mmHg

Brachial pulse indicates a systolic pressure of at least 70mmHg

Carotid pulse indicates a systolic pressure of at least 60mmHg

Obtains and reports an accurate respiratory Rate, rhythm , and quality

Respiratory Rate is 12, regular, and non labored

Properly obtains lung sounds (10 ausculatation points: 4 anterior, 6 posterior)

" Sir I will listen to your lungs if that's okay" "Lungs appear to be clear and equal"

What condition(s) are crackles/rapes indicative of?

Pulmonary edema , congestive heart failure

What condition(s) are rhonchi indicative of?

Pneumonia, aspiration, bronchitis

What condition (s) ar3 wheezing indicative?

Asthma , emphysema

How does stridor differ from wheezing?

Stridor is an upper respiratory sound and is typically heard upon inspiration whereas wheezing is a lower respiratory sound and is typically heard upon expiration, initially.

Evaluator asks candidate to obtain a temperature and Pulse oximetry.

BSI scene is safe.

Evaluator asks the candidate to obtain respirations and lung sounds

BSI scene is safe

Obtains and reports an accurate temperature.

"Sir Im going take your temperature if that's ok" Temperature is at 97F tympanic

Obtains and reports an accurate SPO2 reading.

I'll will go ahead and place an Oxygen Saturation Pulse Oximeter on the pts finger to measure the pts blood oxygen saturation level

What factors can affect the accuracy of pulse oximetry?

The factors that can affect the Poor perfusion, carbon monoxide, nail Polish, and cold extremities.

How does anemia affect the clinical relevance of pulse oximetry?

Anemia can affect the clinical relevance of pulse oximetry bcs a lower amount of circulating hemoglobin will cause a higher concentration of hemoglobin to be saturated with oxygen, leading to a misleading high pulse oximetry reading.

Explain how to obtain a rectal temperature.

1st place a disposable sheath onto thermometer. Then separate the pts buttocks. Then insert 0.5 inch for a pediatric or insert 1.5 inch for an adult. Then hold in until the final result is shown. Then remove from patient, remove sheath, and wipe thermometer with ethyl alcohol.

Rectal, Axillary, Oral, Tympanic. State each in order from most to least accurate.

The most accurate is Rectal, then tympanic, then oral, and then Axillary.

What is the normal blood glucose range for an adult?

The normal blood glucose range for an adult is 70-140.

What are the three "poly" symptoms of hyperglycemia?

The three poly symptoms of hyperglycemia are polyphagia, polydipsia, and polyuria.

What role does insulin play in the body?

Insulin facilitates the movement of glucose into the cell.

What is the BLS treatment for hypoglycemia and what route is it given?

The BLS treatment for hypoglycemia is oral glucose and it can be given via oral or subbucal route.
