What exactly is Geography?

the word "geography" comes from ancient Greek.




"Geo" means earth and "graphy" means write.

What do Geographers study?

Geographers study where people and activities are found on the Earth and why they are found there.

How has geography changed over the years?

in the past, geographers have used maps as navigational tools in order to figure out how to get from place ti place. now geographers use maps as a way to communicate key information about a certain place.

How are maps made?

maps are made my cartographers. they used to be made my hand but now geographers use GIS (geographic information system) which is a computer system that displays geographic data on computer made maps.

What is the difference between Human and Physical Geography?

Human Geography- studies how humans affect the Earth, or how the Earth influences human behavior.




Physical Geography- studies natural features and processes of the Earth

the imaginary line that runs vertically around the earth(North/South)

latitude

The imaginary line that runs horizontally around the Earth (East West)

The Equator

The imaginary line around the Earth. It is Zero degrees North and zero degrees South because it is in the exact middle.

The Prime Meridian

The imaginary line around the center of the Earth. It is zero degrees East and zero degrees West because it is in the exact middle.

an imaginary line of longitude on the Earth's surface located at about 180 degrees East( or West) of the Greenwich Meridian.

Absolute location

the exact location on the Earth of an item.

have different purposes. some common special purpose maps are maps that show population, languages, or ethnicities

the basic problem of map projections is that they may distort the shape, area, or relevant size of items on the map.

scale

the relationship between the size of an actual object on a map and the size of the actual features on Earth's surface

the Mercator map makes things close to the equator look small and things farther north and south look much bigger
