Abduction

Movement away from the midline of the body.

Adduction

Movement toward the midline of the body.

Appendicular Skeleton

Includes the bones of the pelvic girdles, the upper extremities and lower extremities.

Articulation

Also called a joint.

Axial Skeleton

Includes the bones of the cranium, face, middle ear bones, hyoid bone, vertebral column, and bony thorax.

Diaphysis

The long shaft of the bone. Composed primarily of compact bone and provides strength.

Epiphysis

The enlarged ends of the long bone. Articulates or meets with a second bone at a joint. Consists of a thin layer of compact bone overlying spongy bone and are covered by cartilage.

Extension

Straightening of a joint so that the angle between the bones increases.

Flexion

Bending of a joint that decreases the angle between the bones.

Fontanels

Areas on the infants skull that have not yet converted to bone; covered by soft fibrous membranes and soft to touch.

Haversian System

The microscopic unit of compact bone.

Osteoblasts

Bone cells that secrete an intercellular matrix, containing calcium, other minerals and protein fibers.

Osteoclasts

Bone-destroying cells.

Periosteum

The tough, fibrous, connective tissue membrane that covers the outside of the diaphysis.

Synovial Joints

All freely movable joints.

Condyle

A large rounded knob that usually articulates with another bone.

Epicondyle

An enlargement near or above a condyle.

Head

An enlarged and rounded end of a bone.

Facet

A small flattened surface on a bone.

Crest

A ridge on a bone.

Process

A prominent projection on a bone.

Spine

A sharp projection on a bone.

Tubercle

A knoblike projection on a bone.

Trochanter

A large tubercle found on on the femur.

Foramen

An opening through a bone.

Fossa

A depression or grove on a bone.

Meatus

A tunnel or tubelike passageway.

Sinus

A cavity or hollow space.
