Tissue

A group of cells that work together to perform a certain function is called a tissue.

Tissue cells are always reproducing, so the tissue is expanding or growing.

Muscle (Animal Tissue)

Muscle tissue is made of muscle cells and is attached to bones so they can move the body by contracting or relaxing.

Contracting makes the muscle shorter and pulls the body part closer.

Relaxing makes the muscle longer and lets the body part stretch out.

Bone (Animal Tissue)

Bone tissue is made of bone cells and forms the animals's skeleton.

Bones gives the animal its shape.

The bones move when the muscles pull on them.

Blood (Animal Tissue)

Blood tissue is blood cells floating in a liquid.

Blood cells carry oxygen to all parts of your body and fight germs that make you sick.

The liquid the blood cells float in carries water and other things to all the cells in your body and carries waste away.

Bark (Plant Tissue)

Bark tissue is made of bark cells and covers the outside of a tree or woody plant.

Bark tissue keeps water inside the plant.

Bark protects the plant against insects and diseases.

Tubes (Plant Tissue)

Some plant cells are grouped together to form tubes.

Some tubes carry water from the plant's roots to the leaves.

Other tubes cary food from the leaves to the other parts of the plant.

Organs

Organs are different kinds of tissues that are grouped together to perform a certain function.

Heart (Animal Organ)

The heart is made mostly of muscle tissue and nerve tissue.

These tissues work together to pump blood throughout your body.

Lungs (Animal Organ)

Lungs are organs that are made of different tissues that work together to help us breathe.

Lungs contain tissues that form a kind of bag, tubes, tiny sacs, and blood vessels.

These tissues work together to take in oxygen from the air you breathe.

They also release waste gases into the air.

Stomach (Animal Organ)

The stomach is an organ that helps you digest food and turn it into energy.

Tissues in the lining of the stomach produce chemicals that break food down.

Muscle tissue in the stomach contracts and relaxes to mix the chemicals with the food.

Leaf (Plant Organ)

The leaf organ is made of many different plant tissues. The main function (job) of the leaf organ is to make food for the plant through a process called photosynthesis.

Some leaf tissues give the leaf their shape.

Other leaf tissues form a waxy coat to keep the leaves from losing water and drying up.

Stems (Plant Organ)

Firm tissues in the stem organs hold the leaves up to the sunlight.

Tube tissues in the stem organ help move water and other things from roots to leaves.

Other tube tissues move food from the leaves to other parts of the plant.

Roots (Plant Organ)

The root organ has 3 functions (jobs). Different tissues perform each job.

Some tissues take in water and other materials from the soil.

Other tissues hold the plant in the soil.

Another type of tissue stores extra food that the plant doesn't need right away.
