How much SW to buy? |
Rule of thumb is to review an average of three years of data before making this decision. Take the three year average of users. |
What if you don't buy enough? |
If you are under-licensed that could lead to a tech audit and cost much more $$. You always want to make sure you buy enough SW. |
When a SW update is released will they receive this newest version? |
By paying for the updates right now supported customers on older versions will receive updates to currents versions |
Who is responsible for understanding our license set up/managing it? |
The customer, you should emphasis that they have a group/individual who will be responsible for managing and understanding license agreements |
What is Over-deployment? |
A compliance issue that occurs when users who are not licensed for the SW are using it. |
What is a SW license agreement? |
Contract between a SW Company and the user of the SW |
How are licenses granted? |
Most common is through a written and signed agreement or via a written shrink wrap or click-wrap agreements in which the user indicated acceptance of the rights and limitations in the license by opening the SW or clicking a button on a computer screen |
Where overarching license rights are described: |
OMA (Oracle Master Agreement) |
Where rights regarding specific products and services are: |
OD (Ordering Document) |
Specifically the OMA includes: |
standard rights granted, ownership, restrictions, warranties, disclaimers, confidentialities ect. as it related to Oracle products and services |
Specificially the OD includes: |
describes the specific products, types of licenses, number of users, level of support and discounts(if any) a customer has order and will receive |
When you sign a OD you are: |
indicating your acceptance of the license terms in the OMA as well as the OD |
The Oracle store uses what version of the OMA and OD? |
Clickable |
Perpetual license |
a one-time license fee that allows continued use of the SW program for as long as the customer complies with all terms of the license agreement |
Term license |
for a specific limited period of time during which the user is allowed to access and use the SW. At the end of the term the user mist stop using the SW or extend the term or purchase new licenses. Oracle offers annual term licenses for all products in 1-5 year terms. |
License metric |
how the SW using is being measured when Oracle licenses a product to a customer |
Example of license metric |
Application user defined as an individual authorized by you to use the applicable licensed application programs which are installed on a single server/multiple servers regardless of whether the the individual is actively using the programs at any given time |
Where can license metrics be found |
included and defined in your OD |
Minimums |
number of licenses a customer is required to purchase when licensing Oracle products (varies from product or product) |
Customers are required to obtain licenses based on... |
their actual SW usage or Oracles licensing minimums, whichever is greater. |
Oracle Database EE minimums |
1 processor and 100 for Oracle Human Resources |
How majority of SW is delivered |
Oracle SW Delivery Cloud site: edelivery.oracle.com. Or if they need physical SW shipment will receive DVD's |

Intergration Products |
enable you to integrate your legacy data and apps into your Oracle environment |
2 Types of Tech licenses |
Named User Plus and Processor |
Named User Plus |
users can be identified and counted, includes both humans and non-human operated devices that are accessing the program Formula= number of devices+number of users |
Processor |
Mostly used in environments where the SW users cannot be easily identified or counted, example inter-based apps. It is also used when it is more cost effective than name User Plus. All processors where the Oracle programs are installed/running must be licensed Formula= total number of cores of the processor x a core processor licensing factor (see Oracle Processor Core Factor Table) |
4 Environments to License |
Development, test/staging, production and standby |
Development |
Set up, customization and modification of SW, any person doing this must be licensed Can be downloaded for limited development work via the OTN (Oracle Technology Network) |
OTN |
website is governed by a special agreement called the OTN Development License-only to be used in this environment Customers who want use any apps developed under an OTN license for internal data processing, commercial or production must secure a Full Use Oracle license under the OTN prior to using apps for that purpose |
Full Use License |
less restrictive license are under a OLSA (Oracle License Services Agreement) Can be bought from the Oracle Store or through their Oracles Sales Rep |
Test/Staging |
used to verify that new or customized code runs properly Can be staged on separate servers or on the same for development or production Must be licensed with a OLSA or appropriate Oracle (or Oracle authorized reseller license agreement. If a test/staging environment is maintained on the same server as a production or dev environment and that server is fully licensed for all relevant programs on a per Processor metric, than no additional licenses are required for the test/staging environment |
Production |
used by end users for business or other operations all programs must be licensed under an OLSA or other appropriate Oracle (or authorized reseller) license agreement. |
Backup/Failover/Standby/Remote Mirroring |
See the Licensing Data Recovery Environments document for more information |
Partitioning Servers |
See the Partitioning document for more information |
Batching |
Oracles definition (can vary from vendor to vendor) activity that allows a group of tasks occurring at different times to be processed all at the same time, while requiring little or no interaction from the user. Performed to transport data from computer to computer where the database is running |
2 types of batching |
Automatic batch/data feeds-requires no human interaction because batching scripts have been written that automatically uploads the data Manual batch/data feeds-manual process that requires human interaction of the user enables the execution of the batching scripts |
Licensing batching |
both Named User Plus and Processor metrics can be used Automatic batch- Named User Plus Manual batch-users who are performing the batch/data feeds are considered actual users and need to be licenses, the number of licenses required is greater of the licensing minimum or the total number of actual users accessing the Oracle Program |
Import/Export of Flat Files |
requires human interaction and allows importing of data from flat files into Oracle Database using import and export utilities |
Import/Export metrics |
Both Named User Plus and Processor Processor-all processors where the Oracle Database is installed and or running must be licensed Named User Plus-the users who are performing the import/export of flat files are considered actual users and need to be licensed |
Multiplexing |
when a large number of end users and or devices access a systems via an interface such as a TP monitor or a web server product so that the apparent number of users and/ or devices accessing the system is much smaller than the actual number of user or devices |
Multiplexing licensing |
If Oracle SW is part of an environment in which multiplexing HW or SW is used then all user and or devices must be licensed on the front end Both Processor and Named User Plus can be ised Processor-all processors where the Oracle Database is installed and or running must be licensed Named User- number of licenses is required is the licnesing min or the total number of actual users at the front end who are accessing the Oracle program, whichever is greater |
shared |
a storage device is defined as shared when it is connected to and used by two or more systems |
shared storage |
devices have been gaining widespread adoption in enterprise data centers due to their flexibility and cost effective storage administration |
Licensing on shared storage |
standard-licensing policies applies, all processors where the Oracle programs are installed and/or running need to be licensed |
Shared storage on Exalogic Elastic Cloud (Trusted Partitions Environment) |
when exalogic is virtualized the volume in the shared storage that contains the application is binary is visible from all the nodes and hence the software has to licensed on all the nodes that are powered on. Option to reduce licensing cost is to leverage the Oracle Trusted Partition licensing scheme, which allows sub capacity licensing options |
