Manufacturer's guide, use a reliable pressure gauge, check and adjust pressures when the tyres are cold

Don't forget a spare tyre amd remeber to refit valve caps

Tell me how you make sure your head crash restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash

Not all restraints are adjustable but the rigid part of the head restraint should be at least as high as the eye

The head restraint should also be as close to the back of the head as is comfortable

Tell me how you'd check the power-assisted steering is working before starting a journey

If the steering becomes heavy, the system may be faulty, so before starting the journey 2 checks can be made:

Gentle pressure on the steering wheel (maintained while the engine is started) should result in a slight but noticeable movement as it starts

Or turning the steering wheel just after moving off will indicate that power assistance is working

Tell me how you'd switch on the rear fog lights and explain when you'd use them

Operate the switch and check if the warning light is on and explain the use

Tell me how you switch your headlight from dipped to main beam and explain how you'd know the main beam is on

Operate the switch and check with the main beam warning light

Open the bonnet and tell me how you'd check that the engine has sufficient oil

Identify the dipstick/oil level indicator, describe check of oil level against minimum and maximum markers

Open the bonnet and tell me how youd check that the engine has sufficient engine coolant

Identify high and low level markings on the header tank where fitted or radiator filler cap and describe how to top up to correct level

Open the bonnet and tell me how you'd check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid

Identify the reservoir and check the level against the high and low markings

Show me how you'd wash and clean the rear windscreen

The control is usually on the right hand stalk, to use it, pull towards you slightly for the rear windscreen wiper and a little firmer to wash it (this is only on some cars though so check with your driving teacher)

Show me how you'd wash and clean the front windscreen

You'd press the end of the right hand stalk (this is only on some cars though so check with your driving teacher)

Turn the switch on the left away from you twice (this is only on some cars though so check with your driving teacher)

Press the symbol of a sideways rectangle with three wavy arrows going inside it shown in the picture (this is only on some cars though so check with your driving teacher)

Show me how you'd operate the horn

Press the middle of the steering wheel when there are no other road users nearby (this isn't all cars though so check with your driving teacher)

Show me how you'd demist the front windscreen

The demister button is a bendy rectangle shape with a zigzag line through it which looks a bit like a heartbeat machine (this is only on some cars though so check with your driving teacher)

Show me how you'd open and close the side window

The controls should be on the door and each button corresponds to the four windows (this is only on some cars though so check with your driving teacher)
