Flexion

0-170

Position of subject: Seated or supine with humerus in natural position.

Position of goniometer: Axis is center of humerus just distal to acromion process. Stationary bar is parallel to trunk, and movable bar is parallel to humerus.

Direction of movement: Patient's arm is raised in front of body in a sagittal plane of movement.

Extension

0-60

Position of subject: Seated or prone with no obstruction behind humerus. Humerus in natural position.

Position of Goniometer: Same as shoulder flexion.

Direction of movement: Patient's arm is to be brought in back of body in a sagittal plane of movement

Abduction

0-170

Position of subject: seated or prone with humerus in adduction and external rotation.

Position of goniometer: Axis is on acromion process on posterior surface of shoulder. Stationary bar is parallel to trunk, and movable bar is parallel to humerus.

Direction of movement: Patient's arm is raised to side of body in frontal plane movement .

Horizontal Abd

0-40

Position of subject: Seated with the shoulder to be tested abducted 90 degrees, the elbow extended with the palm facing down. The patient's arm may be supported in abduction.

Position of goniometer: The axis is over the acromion process. The stationary bar is parallel over the shoulder toward the neck, and the movable bar is parallel to the humerus on the superior aspect.

Direction of movement: Patient's arm is moved toward the back of the body on the horizontal plane of movement.

Horizontal adduction

0-130

Position of subject: Same as horizontal abduction

Direction of movement: Patient's arm is moved in the front of the body in the horizontal plane of movement

Internal Rotation

0-70

Position of subject: Seated or supine with humerus abducted 90 degrees and elbow flexed 90 degrees.

Position of goniometer: Axis is on the olecranon process of elbow, and stationary bar and movable bar are parallel to forearm.

Direction of movement: Patient's forearm is swung down gently, keeping humerus parallel to floor.

External Rotation

Position of subject: Seated of supine with humerus abducted 90 degrees, elbow flexed 90 degrees and forearm pronated.

Position of goniometer: Axis is on olecranon process of elbow, and stationary bar and movable bar are parallel to forearm.

Direction of movement: Patient's forearm is swung up gently, keeping humerus parallel to the floor
