A short story is
is a brief work of fiction where, the main character faces a conflict that is worked out in the plot of the story, not real, piece of fiction
Short story has to have
one plot (series of events), one setting (time and place), one theme (what the story is mainly about, central message), few main characters, can be read in one sitting
Character is
person in a story, poem, or play
Types of characters
round- fully developed, has many character traits
flat- stereotyped, one-dimensional, few traits
static- does not change (remains the same emotionally)
dynamic- changes as a result of the story's events (not physical, its emotional)
Characterization is
how the author develops the characters, especially the main character
Direct Characterization is

The author directly states what the character's personality is like. (Ex. cruel, kind)
Indirect Characterization

reference to a statement, person, a place, or events from: literature, history, religion, mythology, politics, sports
