Protagonist

Main Character of a story

Antagonist

Character who struggles/fights against protagonist

Foreshadowing

A way of presenting something that helps explain something about current situation

Conflict- internal, external, interpersonal

Internal- character must deal with own thoughts/feelings

Mood

Types of feelings created by author for the story (ex. The mood is dark, comical, inquisitive, etc.

Irony

Dramatic- reader knows things character doesn't


Situational- discrepancy between appearance and reality

Plot

Storyline of story- what goes on in it

Symbol

A real object that is an example of the theme or main idea of story

Climax

Highest point of intesity, usually turning point

Setting

Time, place, and circumstances in which story takes place

Exposition

Introduction - background information & what happened before beggining of story

Initial Incident

Leads or begins action of story- what sets things off (nothing else would happen if this didn't )

Rising action

Events/development of story

Falling action

Events following climax which lead to conclusion

Denouement

Final resolution of plot
