Is shock a disease?
Shock is a life-threatening condition, not a disease.
Requirements to NOT go into shock
1) Adequate cardiac pump
2) Effect vasculature/ciculatory system
3) Sufficient blood volume
Who is at risk for shock?
Anybody with any type of disease is at risk for shock
What is MAP?
The average pressure at which blood moves through the vasculature.
How do you calculate MAP?
systolic bp + 2(diasolic bp)/3
What is an average MAP?
70-80mmHg is necessary for cells to receive oxygen and nutrients to metabolize energy
Classifications of shock
Hypovolemic shock
Cardiogenic shock
Circulatory shock
3 types of circulatory shock
*Septic shock - from infection
Neurogenic shock - from nerve damage or meds(epi anesth)
Anaphylactic shock - allergy
*most common
Hypovolemia begins when...
the intervascular volume has decreased by ~15%
Nursing management for hypovolemia
Place client in modified trendelenburg - lower extremities are elevated to 20 degrees & HOB is elevated with a pillow
Most common type of circulatory shock
septic
Nursing management for septic shock
asepsis and hygiene
Hallmark symptom for neurogenic shock
VERY low bp
