Syphilis causative organism
 Caused by the spirochete Treponema pallidum
Syphilis S/S
Primary
 Usually marked by the appearance of a single or multiple sore (chancre)
 The chancre is usually firm, round, small, and painless.
 The chancre lasts 3 to 6 weeks, and heals without treatment

Secondary

 Typically starts with the development of a rash on one or more areas of the body, usually not itchy
Syphilis treatment modalities
 PCN drug of choice
 Abstinence until treatment in completes
 Notify all partners
 If women are treated before their 3rd trimester, infants are not usually affected
 Sexually Transmitted Diseases
syphilis complications
 Many people infected with syphilis are asymptomatic for years, yet remain at risk for late complications if left untreated (heart problems, brain damage, insanity, and even death)
 If adequate treatment is not administered, the infection progresses to the secondary stage
syphilis affect on the pregnant woman and her fetus
 Preterm labor or delivery
 Infected infants, without treatment, can develop brain damage, blindness, hearing impairment, bone & tooth abnormalities, or fetal death
Genital Herpes causative agent
 Caused by the herpes simplex viruses type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2).
Genital Herpes S/S
 Most people are asymptomatic initially
 Symptoms include
 Itching
 Tingling
 Appearance of vesicles
Genital Herpes treatment modalities
 Antivirals
Genital Herpes complications
 The virus always remain in the body
 Primary episode - Recurrences can occur
 Recurrences can be triggered by
 Stress
 Fever
 Sunburn
 Poor nutrition
 Menses
 Sexual activity
 Transmission from mother to baby; may need a C/S
Genital Warts (HPV) causative agent
 Caused by the HPV – Human Papillomavirus
Genital Warts S/S
 Occurs on the vagina, cervix, penis, scrotum, anus, and perineal areas
 The virus lives in the skin or mucous membranes and usually causes no symptoms
Genital Warts treatment modalities
 No cure
 Vaccine against 4 types for young girls
 Topical creams
 Cryosurgery/freezing (liquid nitrogen)
 Electric or Laser cauterization (burning the warts)
 Surgery
Genital Warts compliations
 Increases risk of cervical cancer
Genital Warts affect on the pregnant woman and her fetus
 The disease can also be transmitted during vaginal delivery
 Depending upon amount, may necessitate C/S
Gonorrhea causative agent
 Caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae, a bacterium that can grow and multiply easily in the warm, moist areas of the reproductive tract, including the cervix, uterus, and fallopian tubes in women
Gonorrhea S/S
 May be asymptomatic in men
 Burning sensation when urinating, or a white, yellow, or green discharge from the penis
 Painful or swollen testicles.
 Women may be asymptomatic
 Painful or burning sensation when urinating, increased vaginal discharge, or vaginal bleeding between periods
 May cause PID
Gonorrhea treatment modalities
 Antibiotics
 Rocephin, Cipro, Floxin
 No sex until all medication are completed!
Gonorrhea affect on the pregnant woman and her fetus
 Miscarriage, PROM & Premature Delivery if untreated
 If contacted by infant during vaginal delivery, can affect the infant’s eyes and joints & even cause life-threatening blood infections
Chlamydia causative agent
 Caused by the bacterium, Chlamydia trachomatis
Chlamydia S/S
 Women
 Often asymptomatic
 Vaginal discharge
 Men
 Urethritis
 Discharge from the penis
Chlamydia treatment modalities
 Antibiotics
 Azithromycin / Doxycycline
Chlamydia complications
 Causes PID in women = ectopic pregnancy and infertility
 Causes epididymitis, prostatitis, and infertility in men
Chlamydia affect on the pregnant woman and her fetus
 ↑ risk of PROM (premature rupture of the membranes), preterm labor or delivery
 Infant infected during vaginal delivery → Eye Infections & pneumonia
HIV causes
sexual contact, through blood or other body fluids. A pregnant woman can transmit it to her fetus through their shared blood circulation, or breast milk
HIV S/S
diarrhea, fatigue, fever, muscle stiffness, aching or swollen lymph glands
HIV treatment modalities
 Once mother is diagnosed with HIV, treatment with by mouth antiviral medications are given to maintain mothers’ health and to prevent the baby from becoming infected.
 During labor and delivery, mother will receive a loading dose of ZVD/AZT (zidovudine or retrovir) intravenous , followed by a continuous infusion until delivery.
 Once delivered, the baby will take ZVD/AZT (in liquid form) every 6 hours for 6 weeks after birth. Mother will resume antiviral medications by mouth
Trichomoniasis causative agent
 Protozoal infection
Trichomoniasis S/S
 Copious, malodorous yellow/green discharge
 Itching/burning
Trichomoniasis treatment
 Treatment is Flaygl
Tertiary/ late syphilis
 This stage develops in untreated cases and can mimic almost any pathologic condition
 Any organ can be affected
Syphilis stages
primary stage
secondary stage
latent (late) stage
Tertiary/ late syphilis
chlamydia incubation period
1-3 weeks to months
chlamydia mode of transmission
 Vaginal
 Anal
 Oral
 Contact with blood and body fluids
 During vaginal delivery from an infected mother
