May miss 25-50% of speech signal, language development and articulation may be affected, may appear to daydream or be fatigued, when speech is unclear may feel unsure of self and uneasy, sometimes confused in social interactions

Moderate

Without amplification will miss 75% of speech signal; delayed syntax, reduced vocabulary, imperfect speech production; will miss most classroom instruction, will lack socialization with peers, can lead to isolation and loneliness, may be judged as an incompetent learner

Moderately severe

Will miss 100% of speech signal without treatment both one and group difficult, delayed speech and language skills, reduced voice quality, hard to understand, unassisted will not be able to keep up with oral instruction, will have difficulty with social behaviors, frustration, rejection and poor self-concept

Severe

Cannot depend of auditory system alone to obtain information, without treatment will not develop speech/language or be able to participate in regular academic setting, severe isolation and possible social-emotional problems
