When the majority of people are engaged in secondary and tertiary industry.

Dispersed settlement
define
2 types
characteristics
Dispersed settlements result when each individual settlement is separated by some distance.
1. Uniformly dispersed: settlements are distributed evenly over the land surface.
2. Irregularly dispersed: settlements are not evenly distributed over the land surface because of (steep slopes, rivers, railway etc.)
- typical of farming settlements in Australia
- land is divided into rectangular blocks and homes are placed in centre of block.
Nucleated settlement
define
3 types
Nucleated settlements occur when settlements are grouped or clustered together around a particular feature.
1. Regular shape: such as square or rectangular.
2. Stellate (star shaped): reflects growth along an number of transport arteries.
3. Linear shape: reflect growth along one major line such as a transport route, river valley.
Farmhouse/ Homestead

4. dirt roads will lead to the house from all other parts of the property.
5. along the road will be outwards movements of labour, machinery and materials.

City & Metropolis
describe the essential characteristics
1. cities vary greatly in size and act as regional centres offering a wide variety of specialist goods and services.
2. administrative functions are more significant in these areas
3. minor and major roads, railway lines, waterways (Perth, Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Darwin).
4. Often located on the coast at port sites e.g. Perth, Melbourne
5. Metropolis is a large capital city
6. capital cities which have the influence over the whole state.
7. up to four million people may live in these areas in Australia e.g. Sydney.
Conurbation
1. cities that expand from their original site and absorb centres that were previously separate.
