Matter

Anything that has mass and takes up space (has volume).

Nucleus

The center of the atom that contains both protons and neutrons.

Protons

The positively charged particles of an atom; found in the nucleus.

Neutrons

The small particle of an atom that carries a neutral charge; found in the nucleus.

Electrons

The negatively charged particles of an atom; found outside the nucleus.

Periodic Table

A chart that contains all the known elements; arranged by the atomic number.

Solid

The state in which matter maintains a fixed volume and shape.

Liquid

The state in which matter maintains a fixed volume but adapts to the shape of its container.

Gas

The state in which matter expands to occupy whatever volume is available.

Physical Property

Characteristic that you can see through direct observation that includes color, texture, density, odor, luster, and state.

Chemical Property

Properties that can only be observed when one substance changes into a different substance.

Chemical change

Results in the formation of one or more new substances; a change that cannot be reversed.

Physical Change

A change from one state to another without a change in chemical position

Melting

Change of state from solid to a liquid with the addition of energy.

Evaporation

The change of a substance from a liquid to a gas.

Boiling

The conversion of liquid to vapor.

Freezing

The conversion of liquid to vapor.

Condensation

The change of state from gas into a liquid.

Sublimation

The process in which a solid changes directly into a gas.

Conduction

the transfer of heat energy between objects that are in contact or touching

convection

the transfer of heat energy by a moving liquid or gas.

radiation

the transfer of heat energy by electromagnetic waves.

thermal energy

the total of all kinetic and potential energy of the atoms in an object

temperature

the measure of thermal energy.

Insulator

A material that does not let thermal energy or electricity pass through easily.
