Place-Value Chart

shows the value of each digit in the number 5,647,210.392. For example, the digit 7 is in the thousands place and has a value of 7000. The digit 9 is in the hundredths place and has a value of 9 over 100 or 0.09.

Place- Value

Used in rounding numbers. If the digit to the right of the place value you want to round 5 or more , round up by adding 1 to the number in the place value and then change all the digits to the right of the place value to zeros. If the number is 4 or less, round down by changing all the numbers to the right of the place value to zeros.

Comparing Numbers

To compare numbers to see which one is greater, first find out if one of the numbers has more digits to the left of the decimal point. For example, 100 is greater than 99.62 because 100 has three digits to the left of the decimal point and 99.62 has only two. If both numbers have the same number of digits to the left of the decimal point, compare each digit, beginning at the left.

Adding Decimals

When adding decimals, write the addition problem in vertical form. Be sure to line up the decimal points. Then add as you would whole numbers.

Subtracting Decimals

When subtracting decimals, write the subtraction problem in vertical form. Be sure to line up the decimal points. Then subtract as you would with whole numbers.

Multiplying Decimals

When multiplying decimals, multiply as if the decimal numbers were whole numbers. The count the total number of decimal places to the right of the decimals in the factors. This number will be the number of decimal places in the product.

Dividing Decimals

If there is a decimal point, move it to the right t o make the divisor a whole number. Then move the decimal point in the dividend to the right the same number of places you moved the decimal point in the divisor. Write the decimal point on top, then divide as with whole numbers.

Fraction to Decimal, Decimal to Fraction

Any fraction can be renamed as a decimal and any decimal can be renamed as a fraction. To rename a fraction as meaning "divide by." For example 5 over 8 means "5 divided by 8." After the 5, write a decimal point and as many zeros as are needed. Then divide by 8.

Percent to Decimal, Decimal to Percent

A percent can be written as a decimal. To change a percent to a decimal, first write the percent as a fraction with a denominator of 100, then divide by 100.

Finding a Percentage

Finding a percentage means finding a percent of a number. To find a percent of a number, you change the percent to a decimal, then multiply it by the number.

Average (Mean)

The average, or mean, is a single number used to represent a group of numbers. The average, or mean, of to or more numbers is the sum of the numbers divided by the number of items added.
