Company's board of directors approved a dividend payment, it also designates the payment date and dividend record date

Ex Dividend Date
|
On the basis of the dividend record date, FINRA or the exchange (if listed) posts an ex-date. The ex date is two business days before the record date. A customer must purchase the stock 3 business days before the record date to qualify for the dividend.
On the ex-date, the stocks opening price is reduced by the amount of the dividend to compesate for the fact that customers who buy the stock that day do not qualify |
