Simple Past
Show that the action occurred at some point in the past
Simple Present
show what happens right now (also used to state a fact, and in discussing art/literature)
Simple Future
Show what will or what may happen. Needs shall or will.
Past Progressive
Shows that the action occurred at a specific time in the past. The ongoing action occurred in the past and has been completed by the time the sentence is spoken or written.
Present Progressive
Shows what is happening right now. shows continuation of action or event.
Future Progressive
Shows what will continue to happen in the future.
Past Perfect
Used to show action that was started and completed in the past. Shows that the action occurred at some point in the past before another event in the past, so sentence in past perfect tense will have two verbs.
Present Perfect
Shows something that has happened in the past, that may or may not be completed.
Future Perfect
Shows an action or event that will be completed in the future before another action or event occurs.
Past Perfect Progressive
Shows that an action started at some point in the past, continued for a period of time, and was eventually interrupted or stopped by another event in the past.
