Why is visual field not circular?

B/c it is restricted by nose and roof of orbit

Are visuals fields the same for all colours?

No.

White --> Yellow --> Blue --> Red --> Green

So white is easier to detect than red.

Studying red field important for identifying nerve disorders.

How are Neg after images produced?

When rods + cones, adapt to overstim. + lose sensitivity. The PRs that are constantly exposed to the same stim will exhaust their supply of photopigments --> ↓ in sig. to brain.

Neg images ctd...

The opponent process theory states that?

That human vis. syst. interprets colour info by processing sigs from cones + rods in an antagonistic manner.

Neg images ctd...

3x Opponent channels?

Responses to 1x?

Therefore..?

Red v Green. Blue v Yellow. Black v White.

Responses to 1x colour of an opponent channel are antagonistic to those to the other channel.

Therefore: Green Image = Magenta after image.

X Red Cones?

Protanopia (x L-Cones)

Red wavelengths stim Green cones so red is seen as green.

Red Colour Blindness common in males than Females?

Is sex linked. Gene located on the X chromo.

Determining Relative Sensitivity...

Most sensitive?

Less sensitive?

Lip! (So mouth doesn't get damaged by v.hot/v.cold food/liquid)

Cheek!

Determining Cutaneous Activity...

Reflects what?

Hi Resolution?

Lo Res?

How finely innervated area of skin is.

Lips, Tongue, Finger.

Back, Palms, Shins.

Paradoxical Temp Sensitivity...

Determines?

Initially?

After 2 mins?

After Both in Room Temp Water

Temporal + Spatial Response properties of TRs.

Initially cold + Sore/Warm + Nice.

Cold + Tolerable/Lukewarm.

Cold hands felt warm and vice versa.

Paradoxical Temp Sensitivity...ctd

Why?

Ē info from...

Both cold...

Electrical info from TRs in hands --> Somatosensory cortex.

Both cold nerve endings in cold hand + hot nerve ends in warm hand desensitized to cold + hot respectively. When both moved to room temp H2O, cold nerves in cold hand yes adapted and dampened but hot nerves no, so that hand thought water was hotter than it was and VICE VERSA.
