Black Star Project
Founded in 1996 by Phillip Jackson, The Black Star Project is committed to improving the quality of life in Black and Latino communities of Chicago and nationwide by eliminating the racial academic achievement gap. Our mission is to provide educational services that help pre-school through college students succeed academically and become knowledgeable and productive citizens with the support of their parents, families, schools and communities. Additionally, we help students aspire to post-secondary educational opportunities and training while exploring careers that will be emotionally, intellectually and financially rewarding. Our services are available to all students, particularly low-income Black and Latino students who attend low-achieving schools in disadvantaged communities. In order to achieve our goal of eliminating the racial academic achievement gap, we concentrate on three main areas of initiative: student engagement, parental development and advocacy. The Black Star Project conducts its programming and varied approaches to closing the racial academic achievement gap primarily through parent and student leadership development and advocacy.

Green Cities
Launched in 2005 in San Francisco at World Environment Day in the form of Green Cities Expo. In 2009, we are relaunching this event as an international series of conferences, expositions, fairs, boot camps and eLearning systems focused on the overall transformation towards sustainability. Green Cities™ events focus on regional markets (in the US, state by state), allowing local experts to deliver practical insights relevant to the audience.

Green Cities™ events provide deep, interactive, collaborative, and hands-on practical education. We collaborate with the leading organizations (Partners in Education) in government, environmental sciences, business innovation, economic development, higher education, and community agencies, to accelerate a market transformation towards sustainability. Green Cities™ executive producers believe this transformation happens through a three part process: green inspiration + education / training + sustainable solution sales. Green Cities™ is a dynamic platform for this process.

IGA (Instituto Guatemalteco Americano)
The Instituto Guatemalteco Americano (the US-Guatemala binational center known as IGA) is one of the most well respected educational and cultural institutions in Guatemala. IGA employs more than seventy teachers to teach English to thousands of students of all ages in Guatemala City and in its satellite institute located in (known locally as Xela). In addition, IGA is considered the primary source of continuing education training for English teachers throughout Guatemala. Each year IGA organizes the National Teachers’ Conference (NTC), which provides teacher training and Teacher Training Certificate (TTC) workshops to over 900 ESL teachers and soon-to-be educators. The Ministry of Education recognizes both the NTC and the TTC as fulfilling the national requirement for continuing education training and for certification of English teachers. IGA is in the process of expanding and strengthening the English language curriculum and courses offerings at its satellite institute in Quetzaltenango (Xela), Guatemala's second largest city.IGA established a presence in Xela several years ago, but over the last two years the institute's director (along with the support by the Embassy) has focused attention and resources on transforming IGA-Xela into the leading English language institution in the Western portion of the country. Demand for English language classes in Xela is on the rise as businesses, students and professionals begin to recognize the need for English and are actively searching for effective programs.

We’ll be making a second visit to IGA (Instituto Guatemalteco Americano) in Guatemala City, to coordinate media outreach and distance learning initiatives with complimentary schools throughout the Americas.
