What are the three types of criticism?

Descriptive Criticism
|
primarily concerned with the PHYSICAL and SENSORY dimensions of the work and is limited to what is directly asscessible to our eyes, ears, and touch.

Interpretive Criticism
|
This kind of criticism attempts to analyze the MEANINGS pf a work of art, or the INTENTIONS of the artist.

Evaluative Criticism
|
This form of criticism attempts to make a JUDGMENT about the worth or value of a work of art. It is by far the most difficult form of criticism since it requires a broad base of knowledge about historical sytles, cultural and political parallels, and comparisons with other works of art for its effectiveness.

|
"The film is set in a small medieval French village during the latter stages of WWI, and takes place over a span of about 24 hours" (D)
"The artist tells us in a roundabout way that perseverance and hard work are important qualities" (I) "This is escapist fare, pure, and simple. It has no message, no meaning, and no redeeming social value" (E) |
