What are the three types of criticism?
Descriptive
Interpretive
Evaluative
Descriptive Criticism
primarily concerned with the PHYSICAL and SENSORY dimensions of the work and is limited to what is directly asscessible to our eyes, ears, and touch.
Interpretive Criticism
This kind of criticism attempts to analyze the MEANINGS pf a work of art, or the INTENTIONS of the artist.
Evaluative Criticism
This form of criticism attempts to make a JUDGMENT about the worth or value of a work of art. It is by far the most difficult form of criticism since it requires a broad base of knowledge about historical sytles, cultural and political parallels, and comparisons with other works of art for its effectiveness.
Examples of each Criticism
"The film is set in a small medieval French village during the latter stages of WWI, and takes place over a span of about 24 hours" (D)

"The artist tells us in a roundabout way that perseverance and hard work are important qualities" (I)

"This is escapist fare, pure, and simple. It has no message, no meaning, and no redeeming social value" (E)
