What does hormones have to do with a girl newborn?
Gets estrogen from mother so could have a period with tiny amount of bleeding which is normal. Also know ureate crystals.
What is caput succedaneum?
Edema caused by pressure during delivery. Normal for vaginal delivery
What is cephalohematoma?
Bleeding on the skull that is normal on goes away. Doesn't go into the brain or cross suture lines.
Why do we need chord blood?
If mom is O or R h negative to test for incompatibilities. Also contains stem cells.
What are the different types of coombs test? What are we looking for?
Direct and Indirect.

Direct is testing babies blood for mom's antibodies.

Indirect is testing moms blood for mom's antibodies.
What is the low glucose range for newborns and what do we do if it is low?
Low glucose range is 40 - 45

If it is low you feed the baby.
When doing a newborn screen, what are we looking to see that a baby can do?
Metabolize protein.
Why do we give the baby vitamin K?
To help develop normal flora in the intestines. Also to help with blood clotting.
Why do we give the baby erythromycin ointment?
To prevent conjunctivitis from gonorrhea and chlamydia.
What are the risk factors for jaundice?
Excessive production of bili
