self
the self is the object of the actors actions , it is the internal environment toward which we act
it arises out of social interaction
stages in the development of self
1) prepatory - child imitates parents/others - this has no symbolic understanding or meaning - social objects not yet defined or understood with words that have meaning
2) play: the child takes on roles - label and define objects with words that have shared meaning, you take the persepctive of signifcant others (only one perspective at a time)
3) game- take on the multiple perpsectives/roles of society also known as generalized others , use example of basketball to explain
4) reference group : interacting with multiple groups of individuals where context of self is more important in some than others
Self perception
1) assessment of own action - self is basis of whcih we make our judgments towards objects in situations
2) self concept- stable picture we have of ourselves, influces what we do in situations
3) self judgement - results from social interaction, perception of others judgement important
4) identity: the name we call ourselves, the social location, labels used by reference groups and signficant others
self control
individuality conformity , and cooperation depend on ability to exercise control - social rules become standard by which one controls actions
