Durkheim's 4 main points in religion

1. Sacred & Profane

2. Totemism

3. Collective conscience

4. Prevention of anomie

1. Sacred & Profane

Sacred - Things that are Holy e.g. the Cross

Profane - Things that have no religious importance/meaning

This is vital with the rituals that support the religious beliefs in the sacred, collectively done rituals performed by a group

2. Totenism

Australian aboriginal tribe - Come together to perform rituals.

- The totem clan emblem is usually a plant or animal that symbolises the clan's identity

- Rituals serve to reinforce the group's solidarity and sense of belonging.

- When they worship Totenism they're actually worshipping society.

3. Collective Conscience

- Shared norms and values that make social life and cooperation possible

- Without this society would disintegrate (can talk about Parsons' 4 functional prerequisites)

- Shared rituals remind them that they're part of a single moral community

Sharing

4. Preventing Anomie

- Anomie is a state of confusion, which could leave people not knowing how to behave to one another.

- Religion prevents this by encouraging awareness and supporting the individual e.g. ceremonies
