What is the Legislative Branch called/duties/ General Assembly? |
* Also called the General Assembly * Main duty is to make laws for Illinois * Their are 59 state senators and 118 state representatives in the General Assembly |

Lawmaking Process |
* A bill becomes a law after passing both houses and getting the Governor's approval * A bill can start in either house. They are usually written by a committee * Bills need a majority vote to pass * If the governor vetoes a bill that has passed general assembly, the general assembly must pass the bill by a 3/5 vote in both houses. If this is done, it will be a law without the Governor's approval |

* Special rules about passing bills in the General Assembly * Bills must be read on 3 different days before a final vote * Most bills are contained to one subject * A bill passed by both houses must be sent to the governors within 30 days * The Governor has 60 days to sign it or return it with a veto |
