How are mental health issues classified?

by their presentation and prevalence in society

What is the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders?
|
a handbook that lists different categories of mental disorder and the criteria for diagnosing them

Axis I disorders:
|
clinical disorders, including major mental disorders, as well as developmental and learning disorders
|

Common Axis I disorders:
|
depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, ADHD, schizophrenia
|

Axis II disorders:
|
underlying pervasive or personality conditions, as well as mental retardation
|

Common Axis II disorders
|
personality disorders (e.g. antisocial, and narcissistic), boderline personality disorder with mild developmental delay

Define Psychiatry
|
mental illness (e.g schizophrenia, bipolar disorder)- usually treated by a psychiatrist

Define Psychology
|
neurosis/behavioural (e.g. obsessive compulsive disorder, anorexia nervosa) and personality issues

|
the study of the brain and nervous system (e.g. brain tumours, degenerative nerve disease)

Define Hallucination
|
A false perception of something that is not really there. May be visual, auditory, tactile, gustatory, or olfactory (may be provoked by mental illness).

Define illusion
|
False perception due to misinterpretation of the stimuli arising from an objet. (e.g. misinterpret a curtain cord as a snake)

Define delusion
|
A belief that is held with unshakable conviction- is usually wrong. Pathology lies in the irrational way in which the person comes to the belief

Depersonalization
|
State in which a person feels themselves becoming unreal or strangely altered, or feels that his mind is.
