What is the pre:post cell length for the sympathetic nervous system?
short:long
What is the pre:post cell length for the parasympathetic nervous system?
Long:short
For a paravertebral sympathetic fiber innervating the viscera, describe its path, starting in the lateral horn of the gray matter.
Starts in lateral horn of gray matter in T1-L2, then ventral root to spinal nerve to white rami communicantes, synapse in the ganglion, then out the splanchnic nerve (past the ganglion) to the viscera
What is different between the paravertebral and prevertebral sympathetic fibers innervating the viscera?
It travels the same path as a paravertebral fiber, except it does not synapse in the sympathetic trunk. Rather, it synapses in a ganglion closer to the viscera it acts on.
What are the two sympathetic innervations of the heart?
Cervical sympathetic cardiac nerves and thoracic sympathetic cardiac nerves
What is the parasympathetic innervation of the heart?
Vagus (X)
What is the term for the sensation felt in the skin for visceral pain?
Referred pain
Which spinal nerves innervate the trachea/bronchi?
T1-T4
Which spinal nerves innervate the heart?
T1-T4
Which spinal nerves innervate the foregut?
T5-T9
Which splanchnic nerve innervates the foregut?
Greater thoracic splanchnic nerve (to the celiac ganglion)
For patients with inoperable abdominal malignancies, what can be used for their pain?
Celiac ganglia block
Which spinal nerves innervate the midgut and kidney?
T10-T11
Which splanchnic nerve innervates the midgut and kidney?
Lesser thoracic splanchnic nerve
Which ganglion innervates the kidney and midgut?
Aorticorenal and superior mesenteric ganglion
Which spinal nerves innervate the hindgut?
L1-L2 & S2-S4
Which splanchnic nerve innervates the hindgut?
Lumbar splanchnic nerves & pelvic splanchnic nerves
Hirschsprung's disease results from a failure of what on the large intestine?
Parasympathetic innervation
The abnormal innervation in the peritoneum occurs to which gland? What makes it unique?
Suprarenal gland; preganglionic goes directly to the cells
Which pain is more likely to be dull and difficult to localize, visceral or somatic?
Visceral (referred pain)
