Pulling tension

Cat 5 (4 pair 24AWG) max pulling 25lbs

Good cabling practices

-Be able to freely rotate cables in zap ties-support when suspended

-Never splice

-Keep cable away from heat sources and glass exposed to sun

-Leave pull cord in conduit

-Leave 18" spare wire at outlets and connections

-Don't leave large loops of spare cable

Separation from power

Electromagnetic Interference (EMI)

disrupts flow of information

12" from flourescent lighting

40" from transformers & electrical motors

+600v require engineering calculations

General tips

-Minimum connections

-Overbuild (future additions)

-Build to highest anticipated data rate

-Know your components (never use questionable components)

-Keep record of connections

-Test everything

-Avoid under carpet runs

-Beware of firestop

-Avoid external wire runs

-Separation of power and communication cables (use different holes)

-Each area = 2 100UTP cables or 1 UTP cable + one of another type

-No photocopiers in TC or near cables

Marking outlets and cables

-Mark outlet jacks with cable number and jack number and transmission type (data, tele)

Terminating the calbe

-Punch down block is the main termination component

-3 common types

-66 type

-110 type

-BIX type

Type 66M connecting block

-Voice or data wiring Tele companies > customer equipment

-Found in ER or TC in commercial buildings

Type 110 connecting block

-Permits high wiring density and better separation

-Colors are marked on strips

BIX connecting block

Much like type 110, has dual sided 50-clip connector wafer

-Requires BIX connecting tool

Patch panels

-Minimal sheath removal (0.5") of termination point

- Punchdown cross connect

Pros: Gas tight connections, anti corrosion and signal deterioration.

Cons: Requires person with training, tools, and materials to make changes.

Patch panel cross connect - horizontal cables and backbone cables are directly terminated in panels with built in jacks

Pros: Patch cords connect backbone/horizontal cables to jacks > equipment > reconfiguration easy

Tip Conductors & Ring conductors

Ring conductors:

Blue, orange, green, brown, slate

Tip:

White, red, black, yellow, violet

Importance of pair twisting

Cat 3: Don't untwist more than 3"

Cat 5: Don't untwist more than 0.5"

Cat 6: To be determined

Tighter the better.

Each pair has a different twist rate

Data connector cords

-Cable used to connect equipment from workstation to outlet called user cords

-use term cords to describe flexible stranded wire cables that connect to workstations, hubs, and patches

Termination types

Screw terminal

Insulation displacement connector (IDC)

-Screw termination not to be used above CAT 3

-IDC contact, 66 type, 110 type, snap in type, BIX type

Modular connectors and outlets

-LAN systems use modular connectors

-LAN uses RJ-45, 8 pin mod connectors

-10 - 100mhz

-Can't use CAT5e with CAT5 connector

Pinouts

-T568A and T568B different wiring patterns

-Most common is A

-States is B
