what is supply chain management?
Supply chain managment is a set of approaches utilized to efficiently integrate suppliers, manufacturers, warehouses, and stores, so that merchantdise is produced and ditributed at the right quantities, to the right locations, and at the right time, in order to minimized systemwide costs while satisfying the service level requirements.
from suppliers to manufacrturers
Three factors that make supply chain management difficult
1.-Supply chain strategies can not be determined in isolation. They are directly affected by the development chain.
2.- It is challenging to design and operate a supply chain so that the total sytemwide costs is minimized, and systemwide service levels maintained.
3.- Uncertainty and risk are inherent in every supply chain.
The Development chain
is a set of activities and processes associated with new product introduction. It includes sourcing decisions which will intersect with supply chain at production point.
Global optimization is difficult
1.- The supply chain is a complex network.
2.- Different facilities have different, conflicting objectives.
3.- The supply chain is a dynamic system.
4.- system variations overtime.
