Scientific Method
A self-correcting process for finding answers to scientific questions
Variable
Something that changes in an experiment
Control
The part of an experiment that DOES NOT contain the independent variable, and is used to compare with the part of the experiment that DOES contain the independent variable.
Constant
Factors in an experiment that are kept the same.
Independent Variable
The one factor the experimenter changes to see if it causes a change in the results of the experiment.
Prefix “k”
Means “kilo” – multiplies the basic unit by 1,000
Dependent Variable
The factor or effect that the experimenter is measuring as s/he manipulates the independent variable
Observations
Information that is gathered by using the five senses
Hypothesis
A prediction that can be tested
Experiment
A carefully designed test that is used to verify or reject a hypothesis
Procedure
The step-by-step plan for carrying out an experiment
Data
Factual information, mainly expressed in numbers
Research
Collecting information about a particular subject
Materials
The supplies needed to conduct an experiment
Results
The outcome of the experiment
Conclusion
A brief statement about the experiment’s outcome, and whether or not the hypothesis was correct
Analyze
To examine or study something closely to understand what it is and what it means
Inference
An explanation based on observations
Theory
Idea in science with at least some evidence or observations supporting it
Qualitative Observation
An observation that involves general descriptions (qualities) but not measurement or counting
Quantitative Observation
An observation that is based on measurement (quantities); it gives us more precise information
Placebo Effect
A positive response in a subject that is attributed to the power of suggestion.
Metric System
Also known as the SI system or International System of Units - the system of measurement that is used most throughout the world.
Meter
The basic SI unit to measure length, comparable to 39.37 inches
Gram
The basic SI unit to measure mass, comparable to .035 ounces.
Liter
The basic SI unit to measure volume, comparable to 1.057 quarts.
Prefix H
Means “hecto”; multiplies the basic unit by 100
Prefix da
Means “deka” – multiplies the basic unit by 10
Prefix d
Means “deci” – 1/10th of the basic unit
Prefix c
Means “centi” – 1/100th of the basic unit
Prefix m
Means “milli” – 1/1000th of the basic unit
Model
An idea, structure or system that can be used to represent something you are trying to explain.
Lab Notebook
Where a researcher records everything that s/he does and read about while researching a problem or topic.
Celsius
The SI measurement system for temperature
Trial
One complete run-through of an experimental procedure.
Sample size
The number of units being studied in one trial of an experiment.
