Air Pressure

The weight of the air pushing down on Earth's surface; influenced by air temperature.

Front

Boundary between air masses of DIFFERENT termperatures and humidity.

Temperature

Measure of the amount of thermal energy (heat energy) in the atmosphere.

Climate

The type of weather in a specific area over a period of time.

Forecast

Prediction of future weather based on data collected from measurement tools and past weather patterns.

Meteorologist

A scientist who studies weather

Weather

Is the condition of the atmosphere at a particular time and place.

Rain

occurs when the temperatureof the clouds and the air is above 32 degrees F

Sleet

occurs when rain from a warm cloud falls through freezing air.

Hail

occurs when tiny ice particles collect water while moving up and down within a cloud colder than 32 degrees F

Snow

occurs when a moist wind that is colder than 32 degrees F makes contact with a cloud

Thunderstorms

occur when warm humid air along a front RISES quickly and form a thundercloud, thunder and lightning

Tornadoes

are rapidly circling columns of air that move in a narrow path over land

Hurricane

a violent storm formed over a warm ocean. Wind swirls around an eye at great speeds

Blizzard

is a long lasting snow storm with strong wind and intense snowfall

Thermometer

measures the temperature of the air; measured in degrees Farenheit or degrees Celcius

Barometer

measures the air pressure

Anemometer

measures wind speed in MPH (miles per hour)

Rain Gauge

measures the amount of precipitation that has fallen (sow, rain, sleet, hail)

Hygrometer

measures the humidity in the air

Weather Vane

shows the direction the wind is blowing

Evaporation

During the water cycle, liquid water is heated and changed to a gas called water vapor.

Transpiration

evaporation of water from plant leaves. The water is carried through the plants from the roots to the leaves and then it changes to water vapor and is released into the air.

Condensation

The gas (water vapor) is cooled and changed back to a liquid. The water droplets form clouds.

Precipitation

When the clouds become heavy, the water as a liquid or a solid falls to the ground

Water Cycle

The continuous movement of water in the environment through evaporatio, condensation and precipitation.

Atmosphere

The blanket of air that surrounds Earth

Cloud

A mass of water droplets or ice crystals that have clustered in the atmosphere

Cumulonimbus cloud

A huge vertical cloud that can produce a thunderstorm and hail

Fog

A stratus cloud that forms next to the ground

Cumulous cloud

A puffy, white cloud with a flat bottom

Air properties

Air has mass, Air takes up space, Air exerts pressure

Cirrus cloud

A high, feathery cloud made of ice crystals

Stratus cloud

A flat, gray, layered cloud that covers the sky
