DIFFUSION

The movement of particles from areas of HIGH concentration to areas of LOW concentration.

OSMOSIS

The diffusion of water through cell membranes.

PASSIVE TRANSPORT

The movement of particles across a cell membrane WITHOUT the use of energy.

ACTIVE TRANSPORT

The movement of particles across a cell membrane WITH the use of energy.

ENDOCYTOSIS

The active transport process by which a cell surrounds a large particle, such as a large protein, and encloses the particle in a vesicle to bring the particle into the cell.

EXOCYTOSIS

When large particles, such as wastes, leave the cell, the cell uses active transport to form a vesicle around the large particle within the cell. Then the vesicle carries the particle to the outside of the cell.

PHOTOSYNTHESIS

The process of plants capturing energy from the sun and changing that to food.

CELLULAR RESPIRATION

The process of cells using oxygen to break down food.

FERMENTATION

The process of cells getting energy without using energy.

CELL CYCLE

the life cycle f a cell

chromosome
in a eukaryotic cell, one of the structures in the nucleus that are made up of DNA and protein; in a prokaryotic cell, the main ring of DNA
homologous chromosomes
chromosomes that have the same sequence of genes and the same structure
mitosis
in eukaryotic cells, a process of cell division that forms two new nuclei, each of which has the same number of chromosomes
cytokinesis
the division of the cytoplasm of a cell
