What is heating the environment?
Thermal pollution occurs when this warm water is returned directly to the lake from which it was taken increasing the water temperature. Causes some organisms to die. Now have cooling ponds.
What is energy from atomic reactions?
-Thermo-nuclear, electric generation.
-Bombarding uranium atoms with tiny particles called neutrons causes the uranium to split into 2 smaller atoms=Nuclear fusion
-Nuclear fusion- joins very small atoms to form larger atoms
How fossil fuels affect the land and air?
-Open pit mining (of coal) of surface deposits disturbs soil and vegetation.
-Water used in mining becomes acidified and contaminated.
-Scrubbers-can remove sulfur dioxide
-Sulfur dioxide- acid rain
-Carbon dioxide- greenhouse gases= global warming
What is electric energy from flowing rivers?
-Hydro-electric plants- use water pressure to generate electric energy.
-Clean form of energy
What is produced from burning fuels?
-Burned in thermo-electric generating plants
Non-renewable resources
-fossil fuels
-consumed faster then produced by nature
- Fuel oil, natural gas, and coal.
Renewable resources
-Biomass- solid material from living things
-continually replenished
-trees, wood, aquatic plants
