Big Bang
The primordal explosion that is thought to have resulted in the expanding universe.
(8-15 Billion years ago)
Dark Matter
Mysterious matter different than known matter that can't be seen, but with gravitational effects.
Law of universal Gravitation
Every body in the universe attracts every other body with a mutually attraction force. For 2 bodies, this force is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance separating them.
F= (G)*(mass1*mass2)/(Distance squared)
Inverse square law
A law relating the intensity of an effect to the inverse square of the distance from the cause.
1
F= G -----------------------
Distance^2
Neap tide
A tide that occours when the moon is midway between new and full, in either direction. Tides due to the sun and the moon partly cancel, making the high tides lower than average and the low tides higher than average.
Spring tides
A high or low tide that occurs when the sun, earth, and moon are all lined up so that the tides due to the sun and moon coincide, making the high tides higher than average and the low tides lower than average.
Tangential Velocity
Velocity that is parallel to a curved path.
Universal constant of Gravitation, G
The proportionality constant in Newton's law of universal gravitation.
Mass of earth
6 x 10^24 kg
Elipse
The oval path followed by a satellite. The sum of the distances from any point on the path of 2 points called foci is constant. When the foci are together at one point, the ellipse is a circle. As the foci become farther apart, the path becomes more eccentric.
Escape Speed
The speed that a projectile, space probe, or similar object must reach to escape the gravitational influence of the earth of celestial body to which it is attracted.
Parabola
The curved path followed by a projectile near the earth under the influence of gravity only.
Projectile
Any object that moves through the air of through space under the influence of gravity.
Satellite
Any projectile or small body that orbits a larger body.
Escape Velocities of planets. (in Km/s)
