what is a combustion reaction? |
a combustion reaction is when there is something that is burning which happens between a fuel and it also reacts with oxygen |
what is a corrosion reaction? |
a corrosion reaction is when the metal starts to wear off due to a chemical reaction and occurs when metal is mixed with any gas, liquid and acids |
what is incomplete combustion?
what is complete combustion? |
incomplete combustion is when there are not enough oxygen atoms to complete the reaction which will lead to creating carbon monoxide and carbon which is more deadly than carbon dioxide. while a complete combustion reaction is when there is a good supply of oxygen and it releases carbon dioxide |
what is a chemical equation? |
a chemical equation is you show the reactants and the products and shows what is happening in the reaction general rule =reactants->products |
what is a reactant? |
the reactants are the chemical which is combined with another chemical to create a reaction |
what is the product? |
a product is your final result after the reaction has occurred |
what is endothermic? |
endothermic is a chemical reaction that absorbs heat from the surroundings and making them feel cooler |
what is exothermic? |
an exothermic reaction is a chemical reaction us when it releases heat which makes the surrounding hotter |
what are the substances that are needed for a combustion reaction to occur? |
oxygen, fuel and heat |
balance the equation
to balance equations you need to make both sides have the same amount of atoms. we can add a coefficient to make it even. |
what is a coefficient? |
a coefficient is any number that is placed in front of the formula to balance out the equation which means we need to multiply all of the atoms in the formula |
what are a subscripts |
parts of the chemical formula of the reactants which indicate how many atoms are in a chemical |
what are the main 5 rules of writing a chemical equation? |
1: you need to draw an arrow to represent the reaction 2:write the names of the reactants on the left of the arrow 3:write the names of the products on the right side of the arrow 4:separate differents reactants products by a plus sign 5: keep the equation on a single line |
what is the law of conservation of matter? |
the law of conservation of matter is when the same amount of matter exists before and after the reaction |
what is an unbalanced equation? |
an unbalanced equation is when there is more of one type of element on one side than the other which also does not follow the law of conservation of matter theory |
what is a synthesis reaction? |
a synthesis reaction is when you have 2 chemicals that combine together to make one chemical. there is a formula to remember that happens during this reaction formula: A+B=C |
What is decomposition reaction? |
the decomposition reaction is the breakdown of a chemical which is the effect of making the chemical break down into simpler chemicals formula: AB=A+B |
what is a single displacement reaction?
Single displacement reaction is when there one element is changed by another element from another and put into the compound
Formula: AB+C=AC+B |
what is a double displacement reaction? |
double displacement reaction is when the chemicals exchange bonds between 2 reacting chemicals. the change creates a chemical with a similar or identical bond. Formula: =AB+CD=AD+BC |
what are the properties of acid? |
They have a sour taste They react with metals They can be corrosive They are solutions of a compound dissolved in water |
what are the properties of a base? |
They can be solid or liquid. Some solid bases can be dissolved in water. A base that is soluble in water is called an alkali. They have a soapy, slippery feel. They have a bitter taste. They are corrosive. Because strong bases burn the skin |
what is a neutral substance? |
a neutral substance is the PH is in the middle of being an acid or being a base properties They are not corrosive – they tend to be harmless to the touch. They may have a sweet or salty taste or no taste. |
what is an ion? |
an ion is when the element has gained or lost an electron which gives it an electric charge |
what is a cation |
a cation is when the element has gained an electron which makes it a positively charged element |
what is anion |
an anion is when the element has lost an electron which makes it a negatively charged element |
What is the pH scale? |
the pH scales helps us, measurer if something is an acid. base or if it natural |
what is the pH scale for acid? |
pH=0-6 |
what is the pH for natural? |
pH= 7 |
What is the pH for a base/alkaline? |
pH=8-14 |
