How is a canyon formed? |
Water in a river. The river weathers and erodes sediments over years. |
How is a delta formed? |
When sediments are deposited at the end of a river. |
How is a sand dune formed? |
Formed by wind erosion when sand is blown onto a hill. |
What are the 3 rapid changes? |
Landslide, earthquake and volcano. |
How does a landslide happen? |
Landslides can happen on land or water caused by wind, precipitation, earthquakes, volcanos, human actions. |
How does an earthquake happen? |
Happens when two blocks of earth slip past each other. Forms big openings on the ground and destroys buildings. |
What are some facts about a volcano? |
It is a mountain open to a pool of lava
Magma - molten lava underground Lava - molten rock on surface Temp = 1300 to 2200
Create fertile soil Forms islands Forms rocks
How might a volcano eruption change the earths surface? |
Forms islands Forms volcanos Forms igneous rocks Provides nutrients Destroys land |
How might an earthquake change the earths surface? |
Destroys land A tsunami can cause flooding Opens cracks on the ground |
How might a landslide change the earths surface? |
Destroys land Creates new hilla |
Why causes a volcanic eruption? |
Magma under the crust heats up and expands |
What happens when a volcano erupts? |
Magma goes up the main vent and out the crater as lava. |
What causes an earthquake? |
The movement of plates |
What happens during an earthquake? |
Plates move against each other and build up oressure |
What causes a landslide? |
Failure of volcanic slopes? Human activity Earthquakes |
What happens during landslides? |
Dirt, pebbles, and rocks fall down by gravity. |
What is plate tectonics? |
A scientific theory that describes the large scale motions of the earth’s plates which make up the lithosphere. These plates rest in the astenosphere. |
What did Alfred Wegner develop? |
Theory of Pangea and continental drift. |
What is a convergent boundary? |
Where 2 tectonic plates come together. |
What is a divergent boundary? |
Where 2 tectonic plates pull apart. |
What is a transform boundary? |
Where 2 tectonic plates grind past each other. |
What are natural resources? |
Things people use that come from the environment |
Why are the 3 types of natural resources? |
Alternative energy, non-renewal, renewable. |
What are renewable resources? |
Natural resources that can be replaced in a short period of time. Examples are plants, water, animals and air. |
What are non renewable resources? |
Natural resources that take millions of years to form and can be used up. Examples include coal, oil, natural gas and minerals. |
How was coal formed? |
From plants in swamps long ago. Thousands of years of pressure and heat changed them into coal. |
What is alternate energy? |
Natural resources that are always available. Examples include sun, wind, geothermal, and biofuels. |
