Inflammatory response

Non-specific immune response to a foreign (releasing histamine, blood flow increases)

Viruses

Non-living patheogens that infect cells

Bacteria

Single celled organisms that can cause illness

Non-infectious disease

non-contagious disease (cancer, diabeties, being a Lion's Fan)

Infectious disease

Contagious disease (cold, flu, HIV)

What is the first defense against patheogens?

Integumentary system, respiratory system, digestive system (anything that prevents patheogens)

Ventricle

Lower chamber of the heart; chamber of which blood leaves heart

How are cold spread?

The cold has to enter the body

T-cells

Mature in the thymus; immune system cells; detect foreign substances

B-cells

Mature in the bone marrow; produce antibodies; memory B cells= immunity

Immunity

Resistance to disease

Active immunity

When you produce your own antibodies

Antibiotic

Blocks bacteria from reproducing; not effective against viruses

What are ways you cen recover from a cold?

Rest (allows immune cells to defeat cold viruses; OJ

Pacemaker

Maintains heart beat via electric signals

Capillaries

Connects arteries and veins; teeny tiny

Toxins

Poisons; things that can kill cells

Vaccination

Small amount of weakened virus

Blood pressure

Force of blood outward on vessels

Fibrin

Protein that helps clotting and scab formation

Red blood cells

Carry oxygen and carbon dioxide; they have blood typing markers

What do marker molecules do for your blood

Identify blood type

Function of white blood cells

Fight diseases

What component of blood is 90% water

Plasma

What is happening when pulse rate increases?

Heart pumps faster

What keeps your blood from flowing backwards?

Valves

Platelets

Blood cells that help clotting

Lymph nodes

Part of the lymphatic system that filters out pathogens

What is the outer portion of the skin?

Epidermis

What is the inner layer of the skin?

Dermis (fatty tissue)

What happens to your skin when exposed to too much sun

sunburn (1st degree burn)

What is the function of oil and sweat glands?

Sweat=cool off, oil= flexibility and helps fight pathogens
