Physical change

Physical changes don't change atoms just their physical appearance

Changes of state steps

1) when a solid is heated it gains more energy

2) making the particles move more which weakens the forces that hold the solid together it will then expand

3) at certain temps the particles have enough energy to break free which changes their state of matter to a liquid

4) when a liquid is heated again the particles gain more energy

5) again it weakens the force and particles setting them more free

6) at certain temp the liquid will boil from a Liquid to a gas

What are the heating procedures called to change states

Solid to liquid = melting

Liquid to gas = boil

Gas to solid = subliming

Freezing procedure to change states

Gas to liquid = condensing

Liquid to solid = freezing

Solid to gas = subliming

Diffusion

When a smell or something is released to the air and the two particles (air and smell) combine to create a diffusion

Particle theory

1) all materials are made up of tiny particles

2) the particles in a substance stay the same whether it's a solid liquid or a gas

3) what changes is the arrangement of the particles and their energy

4) this explains all the different properties of solids, liquids and gases

Explain solids

- have strong forces or attraction between particles

- but can move a bit

- held in fixed positions

Explain liquids

- they are constantly moving

- let some forces or attraction between particles

- particles are close but free to move

Explain gases

- always moving

- are close but free to move

- have no forces or attraction between particles

Physical change definition

Are the ones which re arrange particles without altering any chemical bonds. No mass loss as it is still the same amount and substance just a different state

Solute definition

Is the solid being dissolved

Solvent definiti

Is the liquid that the solute is dissolving into

Solution definition

Is the solute and solvent

Soluble definition

Mean the solution will dissolve

Insoluble

Means the soluble will NOT dissolve

Saturated definition

Won't dissolve any more at that temp

Solvability

How much solute will dissolve

Charges of each particle in an atom

Proton = positive

Electron = negative

Neutron = neutral

Name some periodic elements

Hydrogen carbon nitrogen oxygen fluorine helium neon sodium magnesium aluminum selfur chlorine potassium calcium copper zinc silver gold Mercury iron barium lead
