What is Bioaccumulation?
When a toxic substance moves through a food chain and is accumulated faster than it is eliminated.
What is biomagnification?
How the concentration of a toxic substance multiplies as it goes up in the food chain.
What are 2 examples of toxic substances that could bioaccumulate and biomagnify if introduced into a food chain?
DDT and PCBs
How is PCB concentration measured?
Parts per million (ppm)
How is the energy taken in by a consumer used?
It's divided unevenly into 3 places.
What are some examples of tropic levels?
Producer
Primary consumer
Secondary consumer
Tertiary consumer
What is the difference between a pyramid of energy, a pyramid of numbers and a pyramid of biomass?
Pyramid of energy - shows the energy moving through the foodchain. (Only 10% passed on each tropic level)

Pyramid of numbers - shows the number of organisms at each tropic level.

Pyramid of biomass - shows the total mass of living organisms at each tropic level. (Measured in grams dry weight per square meter)
What is the difference between a food chain and a food web?
A food chain is a diagram showing a simple line of a producer and consumers.
A food web has many interlocking food chains within it to create a more complex ecosystem.
What were some specific negative effects of DDT
The eggs shells of fish-eating birds were not strong.
It created a massive problem in the fishing industry. (The ministry of natural resources monitors the levels of toxins in sport fish in case they're hazardous to your health)
What type of pesticide is DDT?
A broad-spectrum pesticide.
Why was there a problem with DDT?
It would not break down easily in the environment - it gets passed on through the food chain and is accumulated in the fatty tissues of organisms.
Which trophic level is most affected by toxic substances such as DDT?
The top carnivore.
What type of pyramid is this?
Pyramid of energy.
What type of pyramid is this?
Pyramid of energy.
What type of pyramid is this?
Pyramid of numbers.
What type of pyramid is this?
Pyramid of Biomass.
What is the producer in this food chain?
Grass.
Is this a food chain or a food web?
Food chain.
Which type of ecosystem is most vulnerable to biomagnification of toxic substances?
Arctic ecosystems.
