Cell Division

When parent cells split and create daughter cells

Mitosis

Form of cellular division where daughter cells are created and both cells have chromosomes and a nucleus

Meiosis

A form of cellular division where four daughter cells are created and each cell has half the set of chromosomes

Life Cycle

The cycle of life - including: birth, youth, reproduction, and death .

Life Span

the length of time for which a person or animal lives or a thing functions

Life Expectancy

How long one lives or functions

asexual reproduction

one parent of an organism can reproduce an offspring by itself- that is also an identical version of its self.

** It only inherits the genes of that one parent.

sexual reproduction

two or more parents reproducing something that has the genes of both parents

Sperm

The male reproductive cell

Egg

Female reproductive Cell

zygote

Combination of the sperm and egg. All genetic information is transfered to the cell at this stage.

Inter-phase

The phase of a cell cycle copies its DNA in preparation for mitosis.

This is also the longest phase a cell spends time in.

fertilization

When the female and male reproductive cells meet (sperm and egg) they create a fertilized egg.

pro-phase

The first stage of cell division.

Metaphase

The second stage of cell division where the chromosomes become attached to the spindle fibers.

anaphase

stage of cell division in which the chromosomes move away from one another to opposite poles of the spindle

telo-phaes

a stage of cell division where the chromosomes move to the opposites end of the cell.

identical

Same exact things

chromosomes

threadlike structure of nucleic acids and proteins found in the nucleus of most cells. They carry genetic information.

Cancer

Uncontrollable division of abnormal cells.

malignant

a cancerous tumor cell

tumor

an abnormal mass of tissue

benign

non-cancerous tumor that causes lumps

What are the five steps of mitosis

1: Interphase

2: Prophase

3: Metaphase

4. Anaphase

5.Telophase

What is the purpose of mitosis?

to make two new identical cells with complete sets of chromosomes

Purpose of Meiosis

1: creating 4 new cells with only half a set of chromosomes in each for the purpose of SEXUAL REPRODUCTION

Similarities between mitosis and meiosis

Both are ways cells divide and reproduce

Both require the cells to divide

Both are required for sexual reproduction

Difference between mitosis and meiosis

Mitosis produces two cells from one parent using one division event. However, meiosis produces four
