A protein made in your immune system produced to fight infection.
Virus
A tiny particle that invades living cells. It is on the border line of living and non-living things.
Parasite
An organism that survives by living on or in a host organism, thus harming it.
Electron microscope
A microscope that enabled scientists to see and study the shapes and sizes of certain viruses.
Virus Structure
Made up of two basic parts-a core of hereditary material and an outer coat of protein.
Bacteriophage
A virus that infects bacteria-literally means "bacteria eater"
.
Viral Reproduction
The five-step process in which a virus reproduces.
Attachment
The first step in viral reproduction.
Insertion
The second step in viral reproduction.
Production of viral parts
The third step in viral reproduction.
Assemblage
The fourth step in viral reproduction.
Lysis
The fifth and final step in virus reproduction.
Vaccine
Made of weakened or killed viruses. Stimulates the body to produce antibodies.
Monera
One of the five kingdoms that consists of the organisms monerans (bacteria).
Monerans
Now known as bacteria. Tiny organisms that consist of a single cell. Lack a nucleus and other cell structures. Oldest living thing.
Bacillus
The rod-shaped bacteria.
Coccus
The sphere-shaped bacteria.
Spirillum
The spiral-shaped bacteria.
Cell Wall
A tough, rigid structure that surrounds, supports, shapes, and protects the cell. *BACTERIA CELL WALL-DIFFERENT FROM PLANT CELL WALL*.
Capsule
A coating on the outside of the cell wall.
Cytoplasm
A jelly-like mixture of substances that makes up most of the cell.
Flagellum
A long, thin, whiplike structure that propels a bacterium through its environment.
Heterotroph
An organism that cannot make its own food and must therefore eat other organisms to obtain energy.
Autotroph
An organism that can make its own food.
Decomposers
Organisms that feed on dead things, and break them down into simpler substances.
Endospore
A small internal resting cell which some bacteria form when food is scarce or conditions become unfavorable. Consists of a small amount of cytoplasm, and a thick protective outer coat.
