Law of Reflection
The angle of an incoming light source to a flat mirror equals the angle of the reflected light from the mirror. Used in Specular Reflection.
Spectral Reflection or Specular Reflection
Reflection off a smooth surface where light retains image.
Diffused Reflection
Reflection from a rough surface where light does no follow the Law of Reflection but is equally disperssed in all directions.
Refraction
The bending of light due to a change in speed usually associated with travelling between mediums.
Index of Refraction
The speed of light in a vacuum divided by the speed of light through a given medium.
Prism
A clear geometric shape used to refract light.
Angle Deviation
The change in direction of traveling light due to refraction.
Dispersion
The spreading out of wavelengths of light due to refraction. Cuase of the rainbow effect.
Focal Length
Distance from a mirror to the location where deviated light rays converge.
Visible Spectrum
Range of visible electro-magnetic spectrum between 390 nm wavelength and 750 nm wavelength.
Primary Colors of Light
Red, Green, and Blue
Secondary Colors of Light
Magenta, Cyan, and Yellow. Created by blending Primary colored light sources.
Speed of Electromagnetic Spectrum
Same as speed of light. Entire spectrum travels at 186282 miles per second.
Doppler Shift
Change of frequency in a wave due to movement of wave source.
Absorption Spectra
Darkened lines of a refracted spectrum caused by the absorption of wavelengths in elements the light has traveled through.
