What are the 5 different zones?
The intertidal zone, the neritic zone, the surface zone, the transition zone, and the deep zone
Which zone contains the most life, and why?
The neritic zone because it receives a continuous flow of nutrients and sunlight, causing algae, the base of the food chain to grow.
What do scientists use to classify ocean animals?
They use where they live, what they eat, and how they move.
Describe plankton.
Plankton are micro organisms that float on the surface water. They are producers, and they can be geometrically shaped algae or zoo plankton.
Describe nekton.
Nekton are free swimming fish that live throughout the water coloum. They are consumers.
Describe benthos.
Benthos are animals that stay in the same general location on the ocean bottom. They move a little by crawling, and they are decomposers.
What must the organisms in the rocky intertidal zone tolerate.
They must tolerate salinity changes, temperature changes, being in water, being out of water, and the pounding of the waves.
What are two types of Estuaries?
Mangrove forests and salt marshes.
Describe mangrove forests.
Mangrove forests are forests of mangroves, which are short gnarled trees that have roots out of water. That way, whether the tide is low or high, they can get water, and they hold the trees in place. They are often homes for animals.
Describe salt marshes.
Salt Marshes are terrain with oozing and stinky mud with nutrients from tides and fresh water. The most common plant in this terrain is cordgrass, a plant that can drink salt water and release the salt through it's leaves. Organisms in the marsh are protected from the tides by cordgrass, and many animals feed there.
What is and atoll and how does it form?
An atoll is a ring of islands around a lagoon. It is formed by a fringing reef closely surrounding a volcanic island. When the island sinks, it leaves an atoll with a lagoon inside.
Describe coral reefs.
Coral reefs are neritic zone reefs where coral, small crustaceans, and fish like clown fish live. they are found in shallow, tropical ocean waters. Coral only grows a few milometers a year, and divers, fishing boats, and pollution can easily harm them.
Describe kelp forests.
A kelp forest is a type of neritic zone where algae is so abundant that you can barely see through it. They grow in cold neritic waters where the ocean has a rocky floor
