what is a nonfoliated rock? |
*grains are random *do not split into layers |
what are extrusive & intrusive rocks? |
*extrusive: rocks formed above the ground when lave flows/explodes from volcano *intrusive: rocks form underground from magma |
what is erosion and deposition? |
*erosion: wind/water/ice rock that wears out *deposition: settling (all particles ) |
how are metamorphic rocks formed? |
collisions between earth’s plates pudh rock down toward heat of mantle. magma rising through crust provide heat that can produce metamorphic rocks |
how are sedimentary rocks formed? |
formed through a series of processes: erosion, deposition, compaction, cementation |
what is compaction and cementation? |
*compaction: squeezes the layers so particles/grains stick together *cementation: minerals dissolved in water, start to crystallize. “give” solids/grains together |
rocks change |
metamorphic starts out as different types of rocks & melts/changes *granite = gneiss *sandstone = quartzite *shale = slate |
what are chemical rocks? |
minerals dissolved in a solution crystallize *limestone *halite |
what are low and high silica? |
low silica: dark rocks high silica: light rocks |
what and where can metamorphic rocks change? |
heat and pressure deep beneath earth’s surface can change any rock into metamorphic rock |
how are igneous rocks formed? |
formed by volcanic activity |
what are clastic rocks? |
formed from broken bits & pieces of other rocks, eroded & deposited long ago *squeezed together |
slow and rapid cooling produces what? |
rapid: produces fine grains & small crystals
slow: produces coarse grains & large crystals |
name the 3 classifications of rocks |
*igneous *sedimentary *metamorphic |
what is a foliated rock? |
grains arranged in parallel layers/bands *may appear alt. layers of color/flat layers |
uses for igneous rocks? |
*buildings *surgery tools *cleaning calluses |
what are organic rocks? |
made of remains of plants and animals *deposited, compacted, cemented *coal & limestones { limestone includes fossils } |
