Prophase

Metaphase

Anaphase

Telophase

Interphase

The cell grows to its full size. Produces structures it needs. Ex. - cell makes new ribosomes andproduces enzymes. Makes an exact copy of DNA in its nucleus. DNA is found in the chromatin in thenucleus. DNA contains all the information the cellneeds.

Mitosis

Nucleus divides into two nuclei. One copy of DNA is distributed to each of the twodaughter cells. Divided into 4 phases: Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase

Metaphase

In this phase the chromosomes line up in the center of the cell and attach to spindle fibers.

Telophase

In this phase the chromosomes stretch out and the nuclear envelope forms around the nuclear region.

Prophase

In this phase the nuclear envelope breaks down.In this phase the chromatin condenses to form rod like structures called chromosomes.

Anaphase

In this phase the centromere splits and the chromatids move to opposite ends of the cell.

DNA replication

is the process by which a cell makes an exact copy of its DNA.

What are chromatids

identical strands of chromosomes

What forms around the chromatids during mitosis

two new nuclei

What is copied during replication

the cell's DNA

The DNA strand unwinds

1

The DNA strand unzips

2

The nitrogen bases floating in the nucleus attach to their pair

3

The DNA becomes two exact strands

4

During what stage of the cell cycle does replication occur

interphase

A DNA molecule is shaped like a

spiral staircase

A rung of a DNA strand is made up of....

A pair of nitrogen bases

During DNA replication, adenine (A) always pairs with

thymine (T)

Adenine (A) pairs with

Thymine (T)

Guanine (G) pairs with

Cytosine (C)

Cytosine (C) pairs with

Guanine (G)

Thymine (T) pairs with

Adenine (A)

A cell makes a copy of its DNA during the stage of the cell cycle called mitosis.

False
