What is Newton's First Law of Motion?
An object at rest tends to stay at rest, while an object in motion tends to stay in motion (constant speed) (straight line) unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.
What is Newton's First Law often referred to as?
The Law of Inertia
What is inertia?
The tendency of an object to resist a change in motion.
(More mass = more inertia)
What is an example of Newton's First Law of Motion?
A watermelon is harder to move than an apple because it has more inertia.
What is Newton's Second Law of Motion?
The acceleration of an object depends on the mass of the object and the force used to move it.
What is the formula for Force?
Force = Mass x Acceleration
What is the formula for Acceleration?
Acceleration = Force/Mass
What is an example of Newton's Second Law of Motion?
If two objects are moving at the same speed, the one with more mass has more force. (semi-truck vs. small car).
What is Newton's Third Law of Motion?
All forces exist in pairs and every action has an EQUAL and OPPOSITE reaction.
What is Air Resistance?
Friction in the air.
What is an example of Newton's Third Law of Motion?
Balloon rocket from Newton’s Labs
What is Force?
Any push or pull acting on an object.
What is force measured in?
Measured in Newtons (N)
What is a balanced force?
They DO NOT cause the object to change its motion (Net Force = o Newtons).
What is an unbalanced force?
They DO cause a change in motion (Net force > 0 Newtons).
What is Net Force?
The total of all forces acting on an object (add forces working together) (subtract forces in opposite direction).
What is Friction?
A force that opposes motion between two surfaces in contact.
What are ways to increase friction?
1. Make the surface rougher
2. Increase the mass/pressure
What are ways to decrease friction?
1. Make the surface smoother
2. Reduce the mass/pressure
3. Use wheels
4. Add oil, grease, wax, etc.
What is Gravity?
The force of attraction between two objects with mass.
What two things does gravity depend on?
1. MASS: more mass = more gravity
2. PROXIMITY: closer together = more gravity
What is the difference between Mass and Gravity?
Mass is measured in grams (Newtons), uses a balance (scale), is the amount if matter in an object (measure of gravity), and it stays constant (changes).
What is acceleration due to gravity?
9.8m/s/s
What three things does air resistance depend on?
Speed, surface area, and shape
