What is refraction?

Refraction is the changing of direction of a light wave when it enters a medium where its speed is different. The refraction of light when it passes from a fast medium to a slow medium bends the light ray toward the normal to the boundary between the two media.

What is reflection?

Bouncing back of a light ray after hitting any surface is known as reflection. When a light ray is obstructed by any solid surface it will reflect back from the surface, as it cannot pass through the surface. Light ray will be reflected with the same angle with which it is falling on the surface.

What happens when light passes from air into and out of glass?

The path of a light wave as it passes from air into and out of a rectangular block of glass. Since air is less optically dense than glass, the light wave will slow down upon entering the glass and speed up when exiting the glass.

What happens when light passes though water?

When light passes from a less dense to a more dense substance, (for example passing from air into water), the light is refracted (or bent) towards the normal. The normal is a line perpendicular (forming a 90 degree angle) to the boundary between the two substances. The bending occurs because light travels more slowly in a denser medium.
